Some words and climbs from Fred Nicole

prAna has posted the video I made about Fred Nicole. In this short piece, you can see some climbs and hear some words from the master himself. If you dig it, embed it on your blog! CORE will feature a segment with Fred, where we can learn more and see Fred's recent hybrid boulder-route in Switzerland that I filmed in November.

I watched Pure and recently bought it...I feel that the film captures bouldering well and the essence of climbers like Nalle and Cody are presented in excellent fashion, but Fred Nicole...It is as if he was pushed aside, treated as "third string"...I am saying this because he is indeed they most influential climber, and he should be treated that way. Displaying him on one problem is an insult, with comparison to climber like Cody who are shown on 1 move v8 South African choss piles. The only reason I ever watched pure was to witness and know what Fred Nicole is all about, his vision and drive for the sport, but this film didnt do it at all, hopefully your next project CORE will do him proper justice, but perhaps if I want to know more about Fred Nicole I should watch a different movie...any suggestions?

Hi David.

Thanks for your feedback. Fred is generally reclusive. I stayed with him for about two weeks while filming for PURE, and in that time we only agreed to film one problem.

Fred appears in Masters of Stone, and a movie from a couple years ago called Rocklands, as well as an australian film I dont remember the name of at the moment.

His segment in CORE will be much more thorough examination of his character.

Cheers,
Chuck

Thanks for the info...as I said PURE was really good and definitely demonstrates young talented climber well, such as Nalle and Cody who are extremely inspiring too watch, but can not be matched by such legends as Fred, I guess I was excited to see Fred in such a Mainstream Video and then built up to much excitement and anticipation,to be let down, but yet the one problem was filmed extremely well and I did enjoy it...Nice interview and Keep up the good work I enjoy the artistry that is different from bigup its good to have some options to chose from with the climbing film industry, and your a powerhouse, so keep cranking out the films!

The Australian bouldering film, which apparently has a decent amount of Fred footage, is called EOS II. However, I've found this impossible to find...
Chuck I think that little clip of yours is by far the best thing you've ever done. I can't wait for the full length movie, keep up the good work!

P.S. What is the piano song playing during the clip?

The music is a mazurka from Chopin. #24 if memory serves....

I'm excited to hear of a new bouldering movie featuring Fred Nicole! Ever since I bought Masters of Stone III as a teen he has stood out to me as an example of what a true boulderer should be. Imagine my chagrin a short while ago when I found out that many of my boudering friends, some of whom have been climbing for upwards of 7-8 years, had no idea who Fred Nicole is. It will be a great service to the younger generation to be exposed to his viewpoint, and to see him in action, still at the forefront of hard bouldering as he nears 40 years old! Cheers!
